中国商务部 recently announced that it is preparing to sign a \”Joint Development Economic Partnership Agreement\” with 53 African countries, aiming to implement a zero-tariff policy on 100% of products. This initiative is part of China’s broader commitment to enhance economic partnerships with African nations, aligning with the spirit of the recent Party Congress and fostering stable, mutually beneficial relationships between China and Africa amid rising global protectionism.
The agreement represents an innovative free trade framework aimed at addressing the unique needs and circumstances of African nations. It is seen as a significant step towards promoting the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum and building a new community with a shared future between China and Africa.
In response to the increasing pressures of unilateralism and protectionism on global trade, both China and African countries are committed to working together to inject stability into the international trading system. The partnership seeks to provide concrete opportunities for African nations, reinforcing global economic cooperation in line with WTO rules.
Moving forward, the Ministry of Commerce will collaborate with related departments to negotiate the terms of the agreement based on the principles of equality, consultation, and mutual benefit. Discussions will focus on creating more accessible trade, fostering inclusive growth, enhancing supply chain resilience, and exploring modern development sectors.
Moreover, as of December 1, 2024, China has already granted zero-tariff treatment to all least developed countries with which it has established diplomatic relations, including 33 African nations. This provides a foundation for further support and trade facilitation for least developed countries in Africa looking to benefit from zero-tariff opportunities.
